"More diversity is needed," SHIFT UP wants to make more games like Stellar Blade

Director Hyung-Tae Kim emphasizes the importance of single-player titles

Stellar Blade is one of the most anticipated titles of 2024. While much of the conversation revolves around the controversial designs of EVE and the other characters, its developers have placed great emphasis on the combat system and narrative. It's a single-player proposal through and through, and it seems that the studio will continue to bet on such experiences in the future.

Slowly but surely, South Korea is making its mark on the gaming industry, with more titles developed in that country appearing. However, like in the rest of the world, many of these projects are live-service games for mobile or PC due to their online components.

Proposals like Stellar Blade are, to some extent, a rarity. Aware of this, director Hyung-Tae Kim expressed his commitment to single-player games and commented that SHIFT UP will continue to work on more projects of that nature.

"They have very significant value," Stellar Blade director defends single-player games

In a recent interview with South Korean outlet RuliWeb, the head of SHIFT UP talked extensively about various topics related to the new PlayStation 5 exclusive. For example, he addressed the controversy surrounding the protagonist's design and revealed his intention to release new free content after the launch.

At one point in the conversation, he was asked if the company will make more games for consoles after the release of Stellar Blade. Hyung-Tae Kim acknowledges that sales are a complex issue, especially considering the rising development costs. However, he is committed to creating more single-player games.

"I hear advice from the people around me, who tell me that it would be better to create games with higher profit margins. More diversity is needed in our industry, isn't it? Console titles, that is, single-player games with a conclusion, have significant value in themselves," the director emphasized.

The creative highlights that single-player games can coexist with other genres and platforms, creating a market with a healthier offering. To conclude on the topic, he mentions that SHIFT UP plans to tackle the challenge of making more games for consoles, although he didn't share more details about it.

"There is a strong will to continuously create games that allow players to enjoy the ending and return happily to reality," commented Hyung-Tae Kim.

According to new job postings, SHIFT UP already has its next big project in mind. Although the bets are on a sequel to Stellar Blade, the job listing description highlights that it will be a multi-platform game.

But tell us, what do you think of the director's statements? Do you believe the industry needs more single-player titles? Are you a fan of multiplayer experiences? Let us know in the comments.

Stellar Blade will be available for PS5 starting April 26th.
