Stellar Blade has primarily caught attention for its character design, but being a single-player title, it will also have a narrative focus. Its creators have just revealed that its story was inspired by a taxi driver strike.
Stellar Blade was not only created from influences of other video games, such as God of War, Bayonetta, and NieR, but also from movies.
Precisely, the project director and head of the developer SHIFT UP, Kim Hyung-Tae, confessed in an interview with PlayStation that in terms of theme and design, he was inspired by Alita: Battle Angel, a 2019 animated film that adapts Yukito Kishiro's manga GUNNM.
Taxi Driver Strike Inspired Key Theme of Stellar Blade
The theme around which Stellar Blade revolves is humanity, what defines us as humans, revealed Hyung-Tae, who also confessed that the concept originated from a taxi driver strike that made him ponder the possibility of humans becoming obsolete in the face of machines.
"The strike erupted when autonomous car technologies began to advance, almost implying their implementation in the near future," explained the developer. "This instilled fear in taxi drivers that these technologies would eventually take over and replace their work. When I saw them on strike, I wondered what I would do if that happened to me, if one day humans were completely replaced by something non-human."
Stellar Blade tells the adventure of Eve in humanity's struggle against the Naytibas with the intention of reclaiming a planet that belonged to them before, but after the invasion of these extraterrestrial creatures, they had to abandon it to live in space.
