The recent shutdown of Wii U servers served as a reminder that digital platforms are not eternal, and companies will eventually decide to end their operation. In light of this unfortunate event, Microsoft has reaffirmed that the Xbox store for its second console, Xbox 360, will meet the same fate in a few months.
When will the Xbox 360 store close?
As announced last year, Microsoft reminded everyone that the closure of the Xbox 360 store will take place on July 29, a digital platform that accompanied the console's success and drove the consumption of video games and digital content. This means that from the specified date, it will no longer be possible to access the Xbox store from PC or Xbox 360, so you will no longer be able to purchase games, DLCs, or other types of content. This raises concerns about titles that may be lost forever, especially those that are not backward compatible or are very expensive in physical format due to the passage of time.
What will happen to digital Xbox 360 games after the store closure?
Regarding this, Microsoft states that all digital Xbox 360 games purchased in the respective store will remain linked to the user's account, so they will still have access to them and can download them even though the digital platform no longer exists.
In this regard, Microsoft advises players that after the specified date, they should check the Download History section when using their Xbox 360 to install games linked to their account. As for backward compatible titles on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, these are already added and easy to find when reviewing the library of purchased games.
Additionally, the company clarifies that regarding the online experience of some games, this depends on each publisher and studio, so the closure of the Xbox 360 store is not related to that.
Despite the approaching date, in recent days, an initiative led by Sarah Bond, president of Xbox, has emerged to work again on the backward compatibility program to increase the number of Xbox, Xbox 360, and Xbox One titles that can be played on Xbox Series X|S.
