Invincible is a comic series that was first published in 2003 and has recently gained significant popularity due to the success of its animated adaptation. Now, its creators aim to expand that universe into an ambitious AAA video game.
Skybound Entertainment, the company co-founded by David Alpert and Robert Kirkman, announced their plans to develop a new AAA game based on the popular comic series. The project will be undertaken by their division, Skybound Games, and it's expected that industry veterans with extensive expertise will be involved.
Invincible to Get AAA Video Game; Crowdfunding Campaign Launched
Previously, the company raised $18 million from over 6,000 investors through a crowdfunding initiative. Now, they are seeking an additional $5 million to bring the project to fruition. The new campaign, which will remain open on the Republic website until the end of April, has already raised $445,200 USD, far surpassing the initial goal of $50,000 USD.
"We are thrilled to launch this crowdfunding campaign on Republic, and we invite fans to join us in this new expansion and adventure. At Skybound, we prioritize fostering meaningful connections with our audience, and this initiative will allow fans not only to immerse themselves in the world of Invincible, but also to directly contribute to its expansion," said CEO David Alpert.
As for the video game itself, details remain scarce. We know it will be a AAA experience developed by a studio composed of over 30 employees with previous experience at Activision Blizzard, Epic Games, and Electronic Arts. No further information was provided, so the exact approach and scale are unknown.
The campaign description states that the Invincible game will feature competitive gameplay, premium production values, and advanced technical foundations; it also highlights the presence of "local and competitive game modes." Additionally, Skybound Games plans to expand the title with "multiple DLCs" that will introduce new stories to the franchise universe.
It seems that the project is in its early stages, so its release still appears distant, even if the development team manages to raise the additional $5 million. The announcement confirms that Robert Kirkman, the creator of the IP, will be involved in the production.
Certainly, this won't be the first video game based on the comic series. In addition to the mobile game Invincible: Guarding the Globe, fans can enjoy the acclaimed visual novel Invincible Presents: Atom Eve, which was recently available for free through Prime Gaming.
Regarding the animated series, Amazon has confirmed that there will be a third season. While there's no release date yet, all the new dialogue lines have been recorded.
But tell us, are you excited about this project? How would you like the game to be? Let us know in the comments.
