ESRB Leaks the Return of an NES Franchise for Nintendo Switch

The classification organization revealed the first details of Nintendo's surprise.

Despite Nintendo Switch being in its final stages, with rumors circulating about the Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo, similar to its approach with previous consoles, seems to be planning a smooth transition rather than abruptly ending support. An unannounced title has just been leaked to the Japanese company, providing an example of this approach.

Nintendo has recently been quite secretive regarding the successor to the Nintendo Switch and its games in general, to the extent that little is known about the company's plans for the coming months, not to mention its confirmed absence from some major events.

However, accidentally, information has just surfaced revealing the return of a game from the NES era for the Nintendo Switch.

Will Nintendo World Championships Return for Nintendo Switch?

It all began when the reliable informant Pyoro shared an image of the Nintendo World Championships cartridge for the NES, a title that the company created for official competitions. Naturally, the informant's followers took this as a clue to an imminent announcement related to this title or some indication of the Nintendo Switch 2.

Until now, no one had managed to decipher this, but the situation has just become clearer after the classification organization ESRB registered the game Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition in its database, thereby leaking an apparent surprise from Nintendo.

Judging by the details leaked by the ESRB, it seems this is not an emulated version of the original 1990 game but rather a completely new installment, somewhat similar to NES Remix, a compilation of challenges from NES titles for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U.

"This is a collection of 2D challenges and platformer games in which players traverse various modes (e.g., speedrun, survival)," reads the description provided by the ESRB. "Several challenges involve reaching specific points, while others ask players to defeat small enemies or survive brief battles. Some games depict pixelated characters using small swords or arrows to attack enemies; enemies often become stunned or disappear instantly."

The ESRB registration is still available at the time of writing.

In case you missed it: alleged specifications of the Nintendo Switch 2 keep surfacing.
