Assassin’s Creed Shadows remains a hot topic, but not for the reasons Ubisoft expected. The title has received harsh criticism for its portrayal of feudal Japan and for Yasuke, a protagonist based on a historical figure. Various creatives from Ubisoft, and even from Capcom, have defended the game, but the controversies continue. Recently, an alleged group of Japanese gamers petitioned to cancel the title, deeming it offensive.
Now, a Japanese politician has echoed the complaints and expressed concern about how the game represents the culture and history of their country. For this reason, he will be monitoring all player comments to learn more about the controversy.
Japanese politicians have their eyes on Assassin’s Creed Shadows
Through his social media, politician Satoshi Hamada confirmed that he has received multiple complaints and comments about Assassin’s Creed Shadows. These mention alleged cultural appropriation by Ubisoft. Of course, Yasuke has been one of the most discussed topics in the messages he has received recently.
“We have received an inquiry about the alteration of Japanese history by a French game company,” commented the politician.
Other comments point out several inaccuracies in representing the culture and history of feudal Japan. To make matters worse, Ubisoft is accused of supposedly using artificial intelligence to generate game content from historical images.
According to details, Hamada wants to receive more feedback from the community about what is happening with Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Additionally, it is said that his plan is to bring this matter to the National Diet, Japan's legislative body.
For now, the stance of the Japanese government is unknown, nor is it known if Ubisoft will make adjustments to the game to put an end to the various controversies once and for all. Many people have defended the new installment, arguing that it is simply a work of fiction, so historical accuracy should take a back seat.
