Sony has just announced the PlayStation 5 Pro, but this morning the first details of the next-generation PlayStation 6 were revealed. According to the information, the Japanese company will once again collaborate with a major tech firm for the development of the system and its technology. This aims to ensure a feature that players have long desired in every new generation.
PS6 will be powered by AMD technology to ensure backward compatibility
A new report from Reuters revealed that Sony and AMD agreed to work together on the development of the PlayStation 6 sometime in 2022, leaving companies like Intel and Broadcom out of the negotiations.
AMD was responsible for designing and developing the main chip for both the PlayStation 5 and the upcoming PlayStation 5 Pro, making the choice logical. The source claims this decision is crucial for Sony, as it will ensure that their next console is backward compatible.
“Moving from AMD, which made the PlayStation 5 chip, to Intel would have risked backwards compatibility, which was a subject of discussion between Intel and Sony engineers and executives. Ensuring backward compatibility with prior versions of the PlayStation would have been costly and taken engineering resources. Allowing PlayStation users to play games they have purchased for older systems is a feature Sony often includes in a next-generation system,” the report states.
Another interesting detail is that Sony and Intel reportedly met in 2022 to discuss the PlayStation 6; however, negotiations broke down due to a dispute over the profits Intel would gain from each chip.
Intel declined to comment on these negotiations, stating that it doesn’t discuss talks with potential clients. It only added that it has a very strong client portfolio and does everything to innovate and meet its clients’ needs.
Documents related to the Activision Blizzard acquisition suggested that the PlayStation 6 is still years away, likely arriving on the market sometime around 2027 or even later. Although recent information comes from a reliable source, it's important to note that Sony has not confirmed anything regarding its next hardware.
