The PlayStation Vita couldn’t replicate the massive success of the PSP, making it one of Sony’s notable failures. Despite this, players know that it boasts an attractive catalog of titles, including standout exclusives that can only be enjoyed on the handheld console.
Fortunately, one of these exclusives will finally leave the PlayStation Vita and become a multiplatform title thanks to a remaster. We're talking about Freedom Wars, a game by Dimps, Japan Studio, and Sony Computer Entertainment, considered one of the best experiences the PlayStation Vita has to offer.
In just a few months, players will be able to enjoy the RPG on new platforms thanks to an enhanced version distributed by Bandai Namco. It will come to current PlayStation, Nintendo, and PC platforms. Unfortunately, it’s another release not confirmed for Xbox systems.
Freedom Wars returns in 2025 with a remaster
Through an official statement, Dimps and Bandai Namco announced Freedom Wars Remastered, an enhanced version with all the content from the original PlayStation Vita title. This re-release will arrive on January 10, 2025 for PS5, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PC (Steam). For some unknown reason, the game will not have a port for Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One.
As for improvements, the title will support up to 4K resolution and 60 frames per second on Sony consoles and PC. Additionally, it will feature a few tweaks to its weapon crafting system, new difficulty options, refined controls, and, of course, enhanced graphics.
Takashi Tsukamoto, the game’s director, revealed that he had always wanted to develop a sequel, but the ideal opportunity never came to fruition. He also revealed that Sony Interactive Entertainment licensed the franchise, and Bandai Namco showed interest in distributing the project.
In case you didn’t know, the game is set in a dystopian future where humans live in large underground cities called Panopticons after the planet was devastated. In this reality, everyone is considered a criminal from birth and sentenced to millions of years of servitude.
Players take on the role of a prisoner who must complete missions to reduce their sentence, facing giant creatures known as Abductors and rescuing kidnapped citizens. Below, you can watch the announcement trailer:
Good morning, Sinner. For the crime of existing, your 1,000,000-year sentence begins today. Fulfill your duty to the Panopticon.
