Magic: The Gathering will have an animated series: Netflix and Hasbro will bring the card game's universe to television

Netflix Geeked Week 2024 was full of exciting announcements for enthusiasts of series, movies, and video games. The Netflix event had an interesting surprise for fans of Magic: The Gathering, the popular card game from Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast.

The franchise's universe will be adapted into an animated series that will be available on the streaming service. The companies revealed the first details and the first image of this production, which sounds quite promising.

Magic: The Gathering is one of the most popular card games in history. It features original characters and a captivating lore that has evolved over its 30 years, providing ample material to expand the franchise into new media like television.

The animated series is already in production and will be directed by Terry Matalas, who will serve as showrunner and executive producer. His work includes Star Trek: Picard, 12 Monkeys, and other series and films.

Hasbro Entertainment and Wizards of the Coast will also be involved in the production, represented by Patrick Osborne, an Oscar-winning director known for his work on Feast. He will serve as supervising director and executive producer.

“It has been an absolute dream collaboration with Netflix, Hasbro Entertainment, Wizards of the Coast, and the brilliant Patrick Osborne to bring the many worlds of Magic: The Gathering to streaming,” said the creative.

For now, there are no details about the series itself, so we do not know what its story will be or which universes of the saga it will focus on. Matalas suggested that they will explore various eras of the card franchise and tell the stories of prominent characters.

“Magic is the ultimate storytelling sandbox, brimming with iconic, complex characters, extraordinary mind-bending powers, and portals to every genre imaginable. It is also a powerful reminder that no matter what culture, country, or plane of existence you come from, we can all unite and become heroes together,” the creative added.
