Although Square Enix is not going through the best of times, the Japanese company continues to look toward the future and is already working on new video games. For some time now, rumors have circulated about another Final Fantasy remake, but considering that it belongs to an era when these games were enormous, the possibility of it being released in one go seems more distant than ever, and even a major creative weighed in on the matter.
Naoki Yoshida thinks a Final Fantasy IX remake couldn’t be released in one part
During an interview with Video Games (via IGN), Naoki Yoshida, producer of Final Fantasy XIV, acknowledged the fan interest in a Final Fantasy IX remake but noted that, if it were made, it would be a very ambitious project in terms of scope because it’s a large game: "I know there are requests for a Final Fantasy IX remake, but when you think of Final Fantasy IX, it’s a game of great volume. When you think of that scale, I wonder if it's possible to remake it as a single title. It’s difficult."
It's worth noting that in June, Naoki Yoshida denied rumors that he and his team are working on a Final Fantasy IX remake. So, if this project is in development, it would likely be handled by a different team, given that there are already creatives working on the third part of Final Fantasy VII, Kingdom Hearts IV, and likely the next flagship entry in Square Enix’s franchise.
The mention of Final Fantasy VII Remake is relevant in light of Yoshida’s statements, as it’s thought that a project of that size would follow the same path as the controversial Final Fantasy VII Remake, which was split into three titles with the story spanning nearly a decade. This decision and model weren’t well-received by some fans, although the developers made sure, in the case of FF VII, that each chapter has its own conclusion, much like a standalone game awaiting a sequel.
What do you think? Do you like the idea of a Final Fantasy IX remake being released in multiple parts?
