SEGA has been treating Sonic the Hedgehog fans to a wide range of high-quality projects. Interestingly, one of these projects features some beloved characters fans have been eagerly waiting to see again—but it might not fully satisfy their hopes.
We’re talking about the Chao, whose care system debuted as a feature in Sonic Adventure and also appeared in Sonic Adventure 2. Thanks to the charm of these characters and the robust gameplay offered by the Chao Garden, players have been asking for a game dedicated to them, but SEGA has yet to deliver.
However, SEGA has never forgotten about the Chao, and over the years, they’ve featured them in various projects, including animations and as cameos in other Sonic games.

The Chao will return in a new Sonic manga
This weekend, SEGA announced a project titled Sonic X Shadow Generations X Chao, but it's not a new Chao game. Instead, it’s a manga that, as the name suggests, will tie into the upcoming Sonic and Shadow game.
“As Sonic and Shadow embark on their adventure in Sonic X Shadow Generations... what are the Chao up to?” reads the official announcement from SEGA, inviting fans to follow Sonic Chao and Shadow Chao in this new story.
Missed it? The new Sonic game won’t have gacha or pay-to-win mechanics.
Even so, Chao fans should be happy, as any Chao content is good content. Plus, the script will be written by Iann Flynn, a key artist in SEGA’s Sonic franchise. If you’re interested in this manga, you won’t have to wait long—it's set to debut on October 18.
Below is the manga cover featuring the Chao, illustrated by artists miisa_shion and Min Ho Kim.
Is SEGA preparing the Chao Garden game fans have been asking for?
On the other hand, if you’re among those waiting for a full-fledged Chao game, there’s still hope. Months ago, leaker Midori hinted that SEGA might be working on a project with Netflix Games titled Sonic Chao Guardians.
However, it was suggested that it won’t feature the mechanics of the original Chao Garden, but instead, offer a Chao-focused experience. Either way, it will be interesting to see what this project becomes.
Discover Shadow's past with the awesome miniseries Sonic X Shadow Generations: Dark Origins
As a reminder, the 3-episode animated miniseries Dark Origins is now available and may be the best Sonic animation to date. It not only revisits Shadow’s tragic past, but also serves as a prologue to Sonic X Shadow Generations.
