Sony Planned the PS5 Pro Even Before PlayStation 5’s Debut; Hideaki Nishino Reveals They Worked 5 Years on the Powerful Console

The executive hints they’ll continue with this strategy for future releases

After a wave of rumors and leaks, Sony has confirmed the PS5 Pro, which is set to debut on November 7. For years, there was speculation about a more powerful model, much like the PS4 Pro. However, it turns out that Sony was already working on this plan even before the standard PS5 launched in November 2020.

Sony Was Planning the PS5 Pro While Developing the PS5

In an interview with Variety, Hideaki Nishino, head of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s business division, discussed the origins of the PS5 Pro. According to him, the launch of this powerful console is the culmination of a project spanning 5 years. His comments suggest that this console was already in planning stages as the company was working on the standard PS5 model.

Nishino explained that the success of the PS4 Pro provided a strong rationale to develop a premium version for the current generation. Not only did loyal fans buy the more powerful version, but it also attracted new players: "We learned a lot from selling the PS4 Pro. Twenty percent of customers bought it. It was a high-end, premium option. So, there’s a potential audience for that type of product. Interestingly, it wasn’t only our most dedicated users who bought it, but we also saw new users come to PlayStation. We started working on the PS5 Pro even before the PS5’s launch; it was another 5-year project for us."

Nishino further hinted that Sony intends to continue with this approach for future consoles, emphasizing the rapid pace of technological advancements in today’s world and the need to keep up with developments in PC and mobile devices: "The main thing is that there are technologies we can leverage within 3 to 5 years. Innovation and technological advancement are happening faster in today’s world. Phones are updated every year; PCs are upgraded annually. We may not move quite as quickly, but there are features we can group together to bring the best to the console market, and that’s the vision."
